In honor of all the Irish songs and musicians that have influenced and inspired us over the years
U2
U2 formed in 1976, fronted by a man named Paul David Hewson. Perhaps you know him by his more recognizable name, Bono. Four Irish born lads, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr., and Bono himself have gone on to become one of the biggest, and some would argue most influential bands of all time. What is clear from their music, Bono repeatedly reminds fans, “This is America,” they fell in love with the American dream as Irish kids and still, even in these times where many born here are jaded and divided, they feel it is true. At one point, he powerfully spoke of how it is easier to be divided than united while encouraging us to have open eyes and open minds, “even if not open arms,” to those that stand in our way. |
THE CRANBERRIES
A bit of jangle-pop, alternative, indie rock, and post-punk might best describe this folksy iconic, group of artists set up in Limerick, Ireland in 1989. Their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, didn't gain much attention at first, but later went on to become a huge success, selling over 40 million records worldwide. Tragically, lead singer Delores O'Riordan was found dead of drowning in a London hotel room, January 15, 2018. Soon after, The Cranberries announced they would not continue without Delores, disbanding after their final album, In the End, was released in April 2019. |
THE ALARM
Originally a punk-rock band called, The Toilets, This idealistic Welsh rock band, adorned with the iconic giant hair of the era formed in 1981. The Alarm sound ranges from an acoustic, folk-punk vibe to a hard-driving guitar concept best heard on their Declaration album dropped in 1984. Often compared to the band U2 because of their intensity, ambition, and smidge of spirituality, The Alarm had their own style influenced by bands like the Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Jam. |
